BERLIN, Germany - Two invited guests sit before one of the works of 20th century Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama on display at the Japanese Embassy in Berlin. An exhibition featuring his works began June 20 to commemorate the official reopening of the newly renovated embassy building. Higashiyama studied in Germany in the 1930s.

Japanese-style painter Kaii Higashiyama dies of old age at a Tokyo hospital on the night of May 6, his family said May 8. He was 90. The photo shows Higashiyama painting a mural at his home in the city of Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, in December 1967 to display it at the Imperial Palace.

5 works by Higashiyama stolen from exhibition hall

GIFU, Japan - File photo is one of the five sketches and woodblock prints by Japanese artist Kaii Higashiyama which were stolen from an exhibition hall in the city of Minokamo, Gifu Prefecture. Police said Feb. 18 security guards dispatched to the exhibition site after alarms sounded found the works missing and a window on the first floor and the acrylic exhibition case both broken.
