A wisteria trellis at Kameido Shrine

This area was formerly an island shaped like a turtle. It was later connected to the mainland and Kame-mura (Turtle Village) was established. The well dug there was called Kamenoi (Turtle Well). Sometime later, Kame-mura became confused with Kamenoi and the village came to be called Kameido-mura. It is said that during the Edo Period, it was called Kamedo-mura without the i sound.
