New costumes ready for Aoi Festival in Kyoto

KYOTO, Japan - Newly-made costumes to be worn during the Aoi (hollyhock) Festival opening May 15 in Kyoto are put on view for the press at the Imperial Palace in Kyoto on April 30. The festival features Imperial processions to Kamikamo and Shimokamo Shrines made in feudal times as a sign of homage.

The procession was later canceled in the afternoon due to rain. The 1,400-year-old festival reenacts imperial processions in feudal times to Kamikamo and Shimokamo shrines.
