Japan: Cherry Blossoms Begin To Douse Tokyo In Pink 2

The cherry blossoms, or sakura, are blooming and starting to bathe the capital city Tokyo in pink. The trees' blooming was officially announced on March 29 for central Tokyo and is expected to reach full bloom around April 4. Dependent on the weather, locals and tourists alike are expected to visit famous parks and viewing locations to do "hanami", literally "viewing the flowers" in Japanese.

In the 1922 photo can be seen the Kanda River crossing horizontally, Nikolai-do, the Russian Orthodox Church in the lower right, Yushima Seido sacred building in the upper right, the Ochanomizu Bridge in the center left and a flying biplane in the center. 5 workers washed away in Tokyo underground sewage system

TOKYO, Japan - Rescue workers search the Kanda River in Tokyo for four missing workers washed away during repair work in an underground sewage system that was flooded by a rainstorm. Rescue workers earlier found the body of a fifth worker who was also swept away.

Cherry trees by the Edo River

The Kanda Josui (waterway) stretching from around Sekiguchidai in Koishikawa and Iida Bridge was called Edo River (different from the tributary of Tonegawa). It is said that cherry trees were planted here in 1884, but despite its shallow history, the area became a famous cherry blossom viewing site called the new Koganei by the end of Meiji Period. Several boat houses provided lodgings and rented out small boats of this kind. It was a refined pleasure to view the cherry blossoms from the boat. Ochanomizu and Hijiri-bashi Bridge

Ochanomizu Bridge and Nikolai-do, both built in 1891, viewed from Juntendo Hospital. On the left (north) and right side of the artificial Kanda River are Yushima-dai and Suruga-dai, respectively. Ochanomizu Bridge was the first bridge constructed to provide access to the elevated land, which had been built for the protection of Edo. Even though the river was artificial, this area was renowned for its scenic beauty, and visitors enjoyed fireflies and Japanese cuckoos. Yushima shoheiko

The Seido was moved from Shinobuoka to Yushima (Shoheizaka) in 1692 by the will of the 5th Shogun Ietsuna. The Shoheiko was also opened and was made the ultimate school for Confucian studies. It was taken over by the new government in 1868, and was called Shohei Gakko and Daigakko. It was closed in 1872.
