It was inscribed in UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2019. Batbayer Arzan, a Khoomei performer in China's Xinjiang has devoted himself to the Mongolian art of singing with support from the government. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): BATBAYER ARZAN, Folk artist "My name is Batbayer Arzan. I'm from Handgait Mongolian township in Altay city. I'm a folk artist and a fourth-generation inheritor of Khoomei (throat singing) in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Khoomei is a style of singing in which a performer imitates the sounds of nature. The government funds me 4,800 yuan (about 679 U.S. dollars) per year to promote the art. I can get an extra 1,500 yuan (about 212 U.S. dollars) of subsidy per month by teaching
