Tsumura wins Akutagawa award, Tendo, Yamamoto take Naoki prize

TOKYO, Japan - Kikuko Tsumura (R), 30, won the 140th Akutagawa Prize for promising new writers of serious fiction on Jan. 15 for her work ''Potos Raimu no Fune'' (The Boat of Lime Pothos). The 140th Naoki Prize, another prestigious literary award for seasoned writers of popular fiction, went to Arata Tendo (C), 48, for ''Itamu Hito'' (Mourners) and Kenichi Yamamoto (L), 52, for ''Rikyu ni Tazuneyo'' (Ask Rikyu).

(1)Princess Takamatsu, aunt of emperor, dies at 92

TOKYO, Japan - Princess Takamatsu (file photo), an aunt of Emperor Akihito and a grandchild of the last Tokugawa shogun, died on Dec. 18 at age 92. Princess Takamatsu, also known as Princess Kikuko, died of blood poisoning at 4:24 a.m. at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo's Chuo Ward.

Evacuees visit homes within 3 km of Fukushima plant for 1st time

HIRONO, Japan - Kikuko Tatebayashi, wearing radiation protection gear, finds her wedding band in a case as she returns to her home in Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture, within 3 kilometers of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, on Aug. 26, 2011. Tatebayashi was among nearly 150 evacuees from areas within 3 km of the plant who were allowed to visit their homes for the first time in five and a half months since the complex was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Princess Kikuko leaves hospital

TOKYO, Japan - With a bouquet of flowers on her wheelchair, Princess Kikuko, hospitalized after fracturing her leg in August and later diagnosed with an ulcer and pneumonia, leaves St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo on Jan. 27.
