Festival in Nara welcomes demons kicked out elsewhere

TONDABAYASHI, Japan - A traditional Japanese "setsubun" festival commemorating the turn from winter to spring is held at Kimpusenji, a temple on Mt. Yoshino in Nara Prefecture, on Feb. 3, 2014. The festival at the temple in western Japan, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, is unique because while other similar events are held to ward off demons and bring in fortune, this one welcomes both.

"Demons" welcomed in rare event in Nara

People wearing demon costumes run wild during the Japanese traditional "setsubun" festival at Kimpusenji, a temple in Nara Prefecture, on Feb. 3, 2016. While people throw dried beans to shoo away demons in similar setsubun events, the temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, welcomes not only fortune but demons as well. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo
