Japan: Typhoon Lingling Brings Heavy Rain, Damage to Kagoshima

Typhoon Lingling made landfall in Kagoshima Prefecture on the evening of Thursday, August 21, bringing heavy rain and widespread damage across Kyushu. Flooding and landslides were reported in multiple areas. The Otani River in Kawanabe Town overflowed, inundating roads and vehicles, while Ichikikushikino City saw at least five landslides near residential zones, prompting evacuation orders. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued heavy rain emergency warnings for Kirishima City and landslide alerts throughout Kagoshima, with local authorities enforcing evacuations in affected areas.

On Sunday, June 22, Mount Shinmoedake in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, erupted, sending a plume of smoke more than 500 meters above the crater, according to the Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory. It was the volcano’s first eruption since 2018. The observatory has kept the eruption alert level at 2 and is urging people to stay cautious within a roughly 2-kilometer radius of the crater, due to the risk of large volcanic rocks and other hazards associated with the eruption. The observatory has maintained the eruption alert level at 2 and is urging people to exercise caution within approximately a 2-kilometer radius of the crater, due to the risk of large volcanic rocks and other hazards related to the eruption. The video was captured from Kobayashi City, Miyazaki Prefecture, which borders Kirishima.
