3 teenagers die after playing in Kiso River

NAGOYA, Japan - Photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter shows rescue workers searching for four junior high school boys who were carried away by the currents in the Kiso River in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, on July 30, 2012. Three of the four students died after being taken to hospital. The remaining student suffered minor injuries.

NAGANO, Japan - A helicopter crashed and burst into flames on the banks of the Kiso River in southern Nagano Prefecture on March 7, killing all four people aboard. The helicopter, owned by Nakanihon Air Service Co. and chartered by Shinetsu Broadcasting Corp. based in the city of Nagano, was covering a traffic accident.

Sarubashi (Monkey Bridge) spans Katsura River in Sarubashi-cho, Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture. This bridge is considered one of the three most unusual bridges in Japan, together with Kiso-no-Kakehashi (Gifu Prefecture) and Kintai-kyo of Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture). It was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1932. Sarubashi is designed in hijikiketa style, which is characterized by a lack of vertical supports. Nezame-no-toko Gorge is the most beautiful of the eight scenic points of Kiso. The view of the gorge with granite protruding into the Kiso River is breathtaking. Huge rock formations such as Byobuiwa (folding screen rock) can be seen. At its narrowest point, the river is only 7 meters wide and roars with rapids.
