The selection of the coastal path from Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, to Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, is a core project for a Sanriku Fukko (Reconstruction) National Park to be created by rebuilding natural parks damaged by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011.

Reeds have begun to grow again in around 60 percent of a 180-hectare area thanks to replanting by volunteers.
