KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The Ishikari car ferry is launched at Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on Aug. 26, 2010. The boat, some 16,000 tons in weight and some 200 meters in length, will be one of the largest car ferries in Japan.

TOKYO, Japan - Lee Kang Young (photo), a South Korean atomic bomb survivor who filed a lawsuit in Japan over unpaid medical allowances, died on July 11 in a hospital in Busan, South Korea. He was 78. Lee, born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, was exposed to radiation in the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, while he was working there as a forced laborer. KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The North Korean passenger ship Man Gyong Bong No. 92 is berthed at Kitakyushu port in Fukuoka Prefecture on July 28. The 9,672-ton ship arrived earlier in the day to pick up passengers for a cruise to North Korea. About 340 Korean residents in Fukuoka and surrounding prefectures are expected to board the ship and depart Sunday for North Korea's Wonsan to visit ancestors' graves, see relatives and take part in school excursions.

5 Chinese arrested for illegal entry into Japan

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The Chinese-registered container ship Huai Lai He is berthed at a terminal in Hitakyushu's Tachinoura on Sept. 21. Police arrested five Chinese men who were among nine Chinese detained earlier in the day when they were found running from the ship. The ship entered the terminal via Osaka and Kobe after setting sail from Dalian on Sept. 15.
