IOC adds Korean name to Berlin gold medalist

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Son Kitei (C) at the medal ceremony after winning gold in the marathon at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The International Olympic Committee has added his Korean name, Sohn Kee-chung, to its website. He had been listed as Japanese when he won the medal as the Korean Peninsula was under Japanese colonial rule at the time.

SEOUL, South Korea - In a photo taken in September 1988 at his home in Seoul, Sohn Kee Chung remembers the marathon race in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, in which he won gold running under the Japanese name of Kitei Son. Sohn became a hero in his native country after winning the race. He died of respiratory failure in a Seoul hospital Nov. 15 after a long illness. He was 90.

He was 90. Under the Japanese colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula between 1910 and 1945, Sohn, entered under the Japanese name Kitei Son, became a hero in his native country after winning the gold medal.
