'Memories of Sadako'

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Photo shows ''Memories of Sadako,'' the English version of a Japanese picture book on A-bomb victim Sadako Sasaki of Hiroshima, who died at the age of 12, 10 years after the bombing. The English version published in December 2010 depicts Sadako's life in a hospital as the author Kiyo Okura, who died in 2008, stayed in the same hospital room with Sadako for about three months. It was translated by Okura's acquaintance Keiko Miyamoto and others.

Kiyo Bank to seek 20 to 30 bil. yen in public funds

WAKAYAMA, Japan - Phototaken on Aug. 22 shows the head office of Kiyo Bank, a regional bank based in Wakayama Prefecture, which is planning to apply for a public funds injection of 20 billion to 30 billion yen in September under the government's bank recapitalization program. Sources familiar with the matter said that Kiyo Bank, which will absorb Wakayama Bank on Oct. 10, intends to use the funds to shore up its capital and strengthen investment related to information technology.

17-year-old arrested in murder of Aichi Pref. woman

NAGOYA, Japan - A police car takes away a 17-year-old high school student arrested May 2 on suspicion of stabbing a woman to death on May 1 in her house in Toyokawa, Aichi Pref. The youth, a third-year student at a private high school, turned himself in at a police box in front of JR Nagoya Station. Police earlier obtained an arrest warrant for him on suspicion of killing Kiyo Tsutsui, 65.

Torn uniform, other relics reveal scars of A-bomb attack on Hiroshima

A mannequin wearing a torn school uniform is one of the relics showing the consequences of the 1945 nuclear attack on Hiroshima on display at the city's Peace Memorial Museum.
