A chrysanthemum fair

A chrysanthemum fair

The beautiful chrysanthemum garden in autumn at Dangozaka in Komagome (today the slope is located between Sendagi 1-chome and 2-chome). Each gardening shop made its own presentation of a tasteful chrysanthemum garden. Chrysanthemum dolls were also an attraction. One of the displays depicted a scene from a Kabuki play using chrysanthemum dolls. The event reached a peak of popularity around 1887 and later disappeared when the chrysanthemum dolls displayed at Ryogoku Kokugikan (National Sports centre) gained popularity from the end of the Meiji Period. Probably taken around 1897.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:Tamamura Kozaburo, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number48‐118‐0]
