Grandma who knows history of Kompira Kabuki

TAKAMATSU, Japan - Takuko Yamamoto shows confetti she made for parades ahead of spring Kabuki performances in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture, at her home in the town on April 3, 2013. She has helped liven up performances known as "Shikoku Kompira Kabuki Oshibai" at Kanamaruza, or Kyu Kompira Oshibai (Old Kompira Grand Theater), for nearly 30 years by making boxes of confetti to be thrown over the heads of performers during pre-opening parades every year.

TOYA, Japan - Smoke rises from a crater at Mt. Kompira, part of the Mt. Usu volcano, near the Lake Toya hot-spring resort, on April 6. Scientists are warning that a powerful eruption could soon occur at the mountain. Mt. Usu has been emitting smoke and ash since March 31, when it erupted after a 23-year sleep.
