Pioneer and other companies will proceed with demonstration tests of automated driving services

Pioneer, Michinori Holdings (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), and Ibaraki Kotsu (Mito City) will conduct a demonstration experiment of an automated driving service using the 3D-LiDAR (LIDAR) laser scanner sensor on public roads in Hitachiota City, Ibaraki Prefecture until March 21. The experiment will verify that a self-driving bus equipped with the LIDAR sensor can detect people standing on the route and safely board the bus. The sensor will be installed in an automated vehicle provided by Yamaha Motor, which will run a section of approximately 1.8 kilometers. The effectiveness of the LIDAR sensor, which is capable of detecting objects in three dimensions with high resolution, will be verified, and this will lead to the sorting out and resolution of issues for the social implementation of self-driving buses.Image taken on June 22, 2019, location unknown, credit: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun / Kyodo News Images, license plate has been modified.
