KOCHI, Japan - A ceremony is held in Kochi on Oct. 1, 2014, to mark the foundation of a new company operating buses and trams, Tosadenkotsu Co., through the merger of two deficit-ridden firms, Tosa Electric Railway Co. and Kochiken Kotsu KK, both based in the city on the western Japan main island of Shikoku.

Better Place tests electric taxis in Japan by battery swap

TOKYO, Japan - Shai Agassi, founder and chief executive officer of Better Place, a U.S. firm developing electric car infrastructure, introduces an electric taxi that uses battery-swapping technology during a launch event in Tokyo on April 26, 2010. Pioneer and other companies will proceed with demonstration tests of automated driving services

Pioneer, Michinori Holdings (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), and Ibaraki Kotsu (Mito City) will conduct a demonstration experiment of an automated driving service using the 3D-LiDAR (LIDAR) laser scanner sensor on public roads in Hitachiota City, Ibaraki Prefecture until March 21. The experiment will verify that a self-driving bus equipped with the LIDAR sensor can detect people standing on the route and safely board the bus. The sensor will be installed in an automated vehicle provided by Yamaha Motor, which will run a section of approximately 1.8 kilometers. Parcel delivery firm, bus operator team up in southern Japan

A ceremony in the southern Japanese city of Miyazaki marks a deal between major parcel delivery company Yamato Transport Co. and local bus operator Miyazaki Kotsu Co. on Sept. 24, 2015. From October, the latter's vehicles will carry small packages to certain bus stops on mountainous routes with few passengers.
