As the parade began, the crowd reveled in enthusiasm, demanding gifts from Krewe members, who threw Mardi Gras beads, toys, glasses, silver coins and cups from floats to people. Mardi Gras is French, which means Fat Tuesday. Louisiana was once a French colony, and Mardi Gras is deeply ingrained in the culture of cities throughout the state.
