IMABARI, Japan - Construction began in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, on April 17 of a new fishery training ship to succeed the Ehime Maru, which sank off Hawaii in 2001 after being rammed by a U.S. submarine, with the loss of nine lives. Hisao Onishi (C), captain of the sunken Ehime Maru, were among about 20 people who attended the keel-laying ceremony at a shipbuilding yard of Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co.

Seven workers die and one is seriously injured June 10 when the trolley in which they were working falls from a bridge girder at a construction site in Ehime Prefecture, western Japan, police say. The trolley fell after a temporary girder beneath it plunged 60 meters to the ground, police said. The Kurushima Bridge under construction is part of an expressway that connects Japan's main island of Honshu to Shikoku, the smallest of the country's four main islands. ==Kyodo
