Japan: Record January Snowfall Hits Aomori, Disrupting Traffic and Trains

On January 28, Aomori City recorded 150 centimeters of snowfall for the first time in 40 years, causing traffic congestion across the city and a series of train service suspensions. Snow depth reached 154 centimeters by 9 p.m., tying for the second-highest January total on record, last seen on January 30, 1986. According to Aomori Prefecture, as of 2 p.m. on January 29, two people had died and 85 others were injured, while damage was confirmed at four residential properties. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia travelled to the Reina Sofia University Hospital in Cordoba to visit the injured and their families, the hospital that has received the largest number of people injured in the train accident in which at least 41 people have died and more than a hundred have been injured. On 20 January 2026 in Cordoba (Andalusia, Spain). The Royal Family has brought forward their return to Spain from Greece and reduced their agenda in order to be able to travel to Cordoba after the train accident in Adamuz, which last Sunday, 18 January, caused at least 41 deaths and a hundred injured.
