Launched on the 110th anniversary of the writer's death, the gallery opened at the birthplace of Hearn, who was born to an Irish father and a Greek mother in 1850 and worked as a journalist in the United States before going to Japan in 1890. He became a naturalized Japanese before he died in 1904.
