MORIOKA, Japan - Japanese women in old-fashioned costumes ski down a hill using a single bamboo stick as the ski pole during a centenary event at a ski resort in the town of Shizukuishi, Iwate Prefecture, on Jan. 12, 2011. The winter sport is believed to have been introduced in Japan by Austrian Army Maj. Theodor von Lerch on Jan. 12, 1911.
