Gifu Butterflies emerge in Osaka

OSAKA, Japan - Lured by warm temperatures, dozens of the Japanese Luehdorfia, or the Gifu Butterfly, have recently emerged from chrysalises at the home of butterfly enthusiast Hirokazu Sakamoto in Osaka, western Japan. Some are shown in this photo taken on March 17, 2014.

NAGOYA, Japan - A Luehdorfia japonica, a butterfly only found on Japan's main island of Honshu, has been artificially bred by butterfly lover Kisuke Kushihara at his home in Nagoya, central Japan. The butterfly, popularly called the goddess of spring, is on the verge of extinction.
