Myanmar soccer goalie receives official refugee status in Japan

Pyae Lyan Aung, a Myanmar national soccer goalkeeper who refused to return home after protesting against the February military coup in his country, officially received a certificate of refugee status in Japan on Friday, the player and his lawyer said. The Immigration Service Agency of Japan granted him the status of long-term resident, which allows him to stay in Japan for five years, saying he could face persecution if he returns to Myanmar. "I am grateful to Japanese people, the Japanese government and everyone who has supported me so far. I am relieved," he told reporters after receiving the certificate at the Osaka Regional Immigration Services Bureau, adding he wishes to study Japanese and work in Japan.

OSAKA, June 17 Kyodo - A substitute goalkeeper of the Myanmar national team who raised a three-finger salute in protest against the country's military during a qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup in late May told Kyodo News on Wednesday that he has chosen to stay in Japan rather than go home with his teammates. Speaking to reporters through a supporter at Kansai airport in Osaka Prefecture early Thursday, Pyae Lyan Aung, 27, said he refused to return home of his own accord and that he will apply for refugee status.

A Myanmar national soccer goalkeeper applied for refugee status in Japan on Tuesday after expressing fear for his life for making a three-finger salute in protest at the military coup in his country during a recent World Cup qualifier near Tokyo, his lawyer said. Pyae Lyan Aung, who refused to return home with his teammates last week after the soccer match, submitted an application with the Osaka Regional Immigration Services Bureau, according to the lawyer.
