FUKUOKA, Japan - A notice put up at Japan Air System's (JAS) counter at Fukuoka airport on Jan. 19 tells passengers of the cancellation of its flights. JAS said it will conduct emergency checks on engines on its MD-87 and MD-81 planes following engine trouble incidents Jan. 6 and 7.

TOKUNOSHIMA, Japan - Officials check the MD-81 plane of Japan Air System (JAS) at Tokunoshima airport in Kagoshima Prefecture on Jan. 5. The left wing of the plane hit the runway when it landed at the airport on Jan. 1. JAS said Jan. 5 it has found a small crack in the landing gear of another of its MD-81 planes and that it will report the problem to manufacturer Boeing Co.
