MIYAKEJIMA, Japan - Residents of the volcanic island of Miyakejima, south of Tokyo, wearing gas masks, are briefed by an official on April 2 after landing on the island to make temporary visits to their homes. Some 200 of the island's 3,850 residents, all forced to evacuate their homes in September 2000 by volcanic eruptions, returned to the island to repair their homes and collect belongings.

The 813-meter volcano belched smoke as high as 8,000 meters. Experts said the Aug. 18 eruption was the largest in the past six weeks.

MIYAKEJIMA, Japan - A change in the color of the sea is detected early on June 27 about 1 kilometer west of Miyakejima, indicating that a volcanic eruption may have begun under the sea. There appears to be no eruption occurring on land, with magma activity apparently having shifted from Mt. Oyama's western foot to the sea west of the small island, located 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, an expert said.
