(3)Fukui Prefecture hit by heavy rain

MIYAMA, Japan -A resident is rescued by a firefighter in the town of Miyama, Fukui Prefecture, where part of a river embankment was broken by heavy rainfalls on July 18. Thousands of households have been advised to evacuate, including 1,370 in the prefectural capital Fukui and 1,100 in Miyama.

MIYAMA, Japan - A group of voters shouts opposition as official campaign begins Nov. 13, 2001 for a plebiscite in the town of Miyama in Mie Prefecture on the town's plan to host a nuclear plant. Chubu Electric Power Co. wants to build a nuclear plant in the town. The 8,753 eligible voters in the western Japan town will be asked whether they approve or oppose the plan.
