Japan's MSA ships leave for joint drills with S. Korea

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - Crew members of three Japan's Maritime Safety Agency (MSA) vessels stand at salute at Moji port in the southwestern Japan city of Kitakyushu on Oct. 3 before leaving for joint drills with South Korean vessels, in which they will simulate the rescue and cleanup of a collision of two vessels. The patrol boats are the 3,200-ton Echigo, the 1,200-ton Hakata, and the 180-ton Inasa.

MSA surveying vessel picked 'Ship of the Year'

The Shoyo, a large surveying ship of the Maritime Safety Agency (MSA), is selected as 1998 ''Ship of the Year'' on April 26 by the Society of Naval Architects of Japan. The 3,128-ton Shoyo became the first MSA ship to receive the annual award, which was established by the society in 1991 to honor esthetically and technically outstanding vessels.

6 die as S. Korean freighter capsizes in E. China Sea

A South Korean freighter capsizes Jan. 12 in the East China Sea, with seven crew members rescued and the remaining six found dead. According to the Maritime Safety Agency (MSA), the 4,160-ton Kae Chuck Jin capsized in international waters about 30 kilometers north of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan. 5 missing crew of fishing boat rescued off Kagoshima

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - Five Japanese fishermen who had been missing for five days in the East China Sea off Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, are transferred March 26 from a Maritime Safety Agency (MSA) rescue boat to the MSA patrol vessel Osumi (at back). The crew of the 19-ton Ryusho Maru No. 7, from the town of Arie in Nagasaki Prefecture, were rescued in waters some 140 kilometers southwest of Amami-Oshima Island.
