Japan: Bear Incidents Spike in Northern Regions Ahead of Hibernation Season 5

Bear incidents have been increasing in northern Japan. Between April 2025 and March 2026, seven people were killed, marking the highest number of fatalities since records began in 2006. Bears become more active in the autumn before hibernation, so the Ministry of the Environment is urging people to exercise caution.

Japan: Torrential Rains Cause Flooding, Prompt Highest Alert In Ishikawa Prefecture 10

Heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding in several municipalities on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday, September 21, leaving one person dead and 10 missing as of Sunday. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency rain warning, the highest level of alert, for the cities of Wajima and Suzu, as well as the town of Noto.

The Japanese town of Fujikawaguchiko installed a large black screen on Tuesday, May 21, in front of a Lawson convenience store in Yamanashi to block the view of Mt. Fuji in response to visitors' unruly behavior such as illegally crossing or blocking road to get a good shot of the iconic mountain. The popular view from the sidewalk opposite the store gave the appearance of Mt. Fuji perched on the roof of the store.
