The large areas of mangroves along the Indonesian coastline play an important role in purifying seawater, preventing wind and waves, fixing and storing carbon, and maintaining biodiversity. China's CHN Energy and Indonesian National Electricity Company jointly built the "Java 7" project in the western part of Java Island. The CHN Energy Java Power Plant played a leading role in designing and implementing the natural ecological protection project for mangroves as well as other wild animals and plants, which significantly contributed to the restoration of mangroves in this region. Since the 1980s, Xiamen has spared no efforts in ecological restoration in the city. So far, Xiamen authorities have launched five campaigns aimed at Yundang Lake's ecological restoration. Now with six different parks, the lake area has virtually become a "recreational center" for residents. The experience gained in the process were later put into use in similar endeavors in other parts of the city. The improved environment has provided new opportunities of economic development for the city and better natural resources for the people. (Xinhua/Lin Shanchuan)

Red Waters in Madagascar

Red Waters in Madagascar

Handout - Iron-rich sediment colors the red-orange waters of the Betsiboka River Delta in Madagascar in this image taken by an astronaut on the International Space Station on September 30, 2023. The sediment can clog waterways in the delta’s estuarial environment, but it can also form new islands that become colonized by mangroves. Despite its rusty color, this artery of water is important for biodiversity. Within the Betsiboka River Delta, the estuary supplies food, such as seagrasses, to the endangered green turtle and vulnerable dugong, or sea cow. Handout Photo by NASA via ABACAPRESS.COM
