Bush signs bill to preserve WWII Japanese-American internment camps

MANZANAR, United States - Photo shows a memorial hall opened in April 2004 in Manzanar, California, where about 10,000 people of Japanese descent had been forcefully kept during World War II. President George W. Bush signed into law on Dec. 21 a $38 million (about 4.5 billion yen) funding program to preserve such internment camps at 10 sites in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.

Visitors center opens at former U.S. camp for Japanese Americans

MANZANAR, United States - An opening ceremony was held April 24 for a visitors' center built at the former Manzanar War Relocation Center in central California to mark the history of internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. More than 1,000 people including Japanese Americans who had been forced to live in the internment camp, attended the ceremony for the opening of the Manzanar National Historic Site Interpretive Center.

A roster listing over 120,000 Japanese Americans sent to internment camps during World War II after being considered "enemy aliens" in the United States has been completed 80 years after the signing of an Executive Order by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in February 1942, two months after Japan's Pearl Harbor attack, which authorized the U.S. military to evict residents in specific areas.
