Eaux-SCARS, a large-scale scientific program involving the BRGM (Bureau of Geological and Mining Research), local authorities, and in this case the SMABI (Joint Development Authority for the Iton Basin) in the Normandy region. A helicopter from Germany, piloted by a specialist in this type of mission, tows a polygon measuring around 20 meters in diameter. This giant probe can map groundwater tables to a depth of 300 meters and see the interconnections with rivers. Satellite View of Severe wildfires in Spain and Portugal

Handout photo dated on August 16, 2025 shows Massive wildfires are spreading in north-west and western Spain, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents. By 17 August 2025, Spain had already recorded its highest annual total of estimated fire emissions in the 23-year Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) dataset. This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 16 August 2025 shows dense smoke plumes rising from active fires near the city of Ourense, located in the autonomous community of Galicia, northwestern Spain. Portugal has also been severely affected by the fires, with northern and central regions hit the hardest. According to CAMS data, the country’s estimated emissions have nearly reached the highest annual totals of 2003 and 2005. To support national authorities, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) has been activated to provide emergency mapping services. Further information is available here. Spain, Portugal. Wildfire Engulfs 3300 Hectares Near Pauls - Spain

Handout photo dated on July 13, 2025 shows satelite view of Paüls. On 7 July 2025, a wildfire broke out near the municipality of Paüls, in the province of Tarragona, Spain. The fire spread rapidly, burning over 3,300 hectares, one-third of which lie within the Parc Natural dels Ports. The blaze prompted lockdowns affecting approximately 18,000 residents in Paüls and neighbouring localities and has led to at least one casualty of a firefighter working to contain the flames in a mountainous area. This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 13 July 2025, shows the extent of the burn scar left by the fire. Data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites is crucial for monitoring and mapping the extent and effects of wildfires around the world, informing damage assessments and supporting emergency management operations.
