(230320) -- CHENGDU, March 20, 2023 (Xinhua) -- This file photo taken in 1974 shows Wu Xichun (C) conducting field research in the northwestern part of Sichuan Province, southwest China. Wu Xichun is a professor at the College of Energy of the Chengdu University of Technology and an expert in geology. In the early 1970s, while conducting a geological mapping survey in the northwestern part of Sichuan Province, Wu unexpectedly discovered a reef group formed by Triassic siliceous hexactinellid sponges. Since then, he has devoted himself to the study on sponge reefs for nearly five decades. In order to study foreign literature, Wu mastered English, Russian, and German, and taught himself Latin, Greek, and Old French. He spent years conducting tens of times of on-site investigations at the discovery area to obtain more accurate research results and brought back dozens of pounds of fossils by himself. Takeo Miki

Born on March 17, 1907 in Tokushima Prefecture. Miki was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1937 at age 30. He belonged to several conservative parties before joining the Liberal Democratic Party. Miki became Japan's 66th prime minister on Dec. 9, 1974 after the resignation of Kakuei Tanaka over a bribery scandal. He resigned in December 24, 1976 following LDP setbacks in the general election. Eisaku Sato

Born on March 27, 1901 and died on June 3, 1975. Sato, who was a bureaucrat-turned politician, served as prime minister from Nov. 9, 1964 to July 6, 1972, setting the record for the longest continuous tenure in Japan. Sato won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1974 due partly to his three nonnuclear principles -- not manufacturing, not possessing and not introducing nuclear weapons. His diplomatic achievements include the 1965 normalization of relations with South Korea and the 1972 reversion of Okinawa from the U.S. to Japan. (Photo was taken on Oct. 9, 1974)
