Government, Okinawa officials meet over Futemma base transfer

TOKYO, Japan - Officials from the central government and Okinawa meet at the Prime Minister's Official Residence on Jan. 19 in the latest round of talks on moving the U.S. Marine Futemma Air Station from Ginowan in central Okinawa to Nago in the north. The latest talks concern a proposal from the city of Nago on how to reduce aircraft engine noise from the proposed base. TOKYO, Japan - A handout photo shows a part of the engine pipes of Japan's satellite-bearing H-2 rocket that crashed after takeoff in mid-November. It was found Jan. 5 by a deep-sea probe machine on the Pacific seabed near the Ogasawara Islands. The object, which lies on the seabed 2,913 meters down, was photographed by the search machine ''Deep Toe'' from the mother ship Yokosuka, belonging to the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center.

Crashed H-2 rocket's main engine found

TOKYO, Japan - This main engine of the H-2 rocket that plunged into the Pacific on Nov. 15 shortly after takeoff was found on the seabed about 380 kilometers northwest of the Ogasawara Islands, some 1,000 km south of Tokyo, on Nov. 27 by an unmanned vessel of the governmental Japan Marine Science and Technology Center. The engine failed four minutes after the rocket took off from the Tanegashima Space Center on an island of Kagoshima Prefecture, at 4:29 p.m. The photo was taken by the marine science center.
