Toshiba settles with flash memory inventor over patent

SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt - Mitsubishi driver Hiroshi Masuoka (in file photo) of Japan maintained his overnight lead at the 25th Dakar rally on Jan. 19, winning his second straight title in the grueling 8,552-kilometer race through Europe, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Masuoka's fortune twisted for the better the moment he climbed into the top of the four-wheel division standings when Mitsubishi teammate Stephane Peterhansel of France dropped from first to fourth overall for suspension problems the previous day.

Masuoka surrenders Dakar lead after mechanical hitch

TOKYO, Japan - Hiroshi Masuoka's bid for a third straight victory in the Dakar Rally was derailed Jan. 8 as transmission problems cost him the lead after the 355-kilometer eighth stage of the race from Ajtar in Mauritania to Tidjikja. QUARZAZATE, Morocco - Japanese driver Hiroshi Masuoka, gunning for his third successive Dakar Rally victory, speeds into the lead for the first time on Jan. 6 after winning the sixth stage in Morocco between Quarzazate and Tan Tan. Masuoka, at the wheel of a Mitsubishi, quickly negotiated the rocky terrain to put himself a full 6 minutes and 40 seconds ahead of French teammate and overnight leader Stephane Peterhansel, covering the 351-kilometer stage in 3 hours, 9 minutes and 40 seconds for an overall time total of 7 hours, 42 minutes and 23 seconds.
