Returned Buddhist statue on public display

A 14th-century Buddhist statue recently returned to Japan from South Korea is displayed to the public at a museum on Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture on May 16, 2025. Stolen from the island's Kannonji temple in 2012, the statue was returned on May 12, 2025, after South Korea's Supreme Court ruled in 2023 that the temple is its rightful owner.

Sumo: Ex-yokozuna Kitanofuji dies at 82

Yokozuna Kitanofuji forces fellow yokozuna Tamanoumi out of the ring in Tokyo in May 1971, winning the summer grand tournament without losing a single match. The 10-time grand sumo tournament champion, whose real name was Katsuaki Takezawa and who mentored two grand champions including the legendary Chiyonofuji before becoming a popular TV sumo pundit, died on Nov. 12, 2024, at the age of 82, according to media.
