Ex-finance minister Murayama dies at 95

TOKYO, Japan - Former finance minister Tatsuo Murayama (file photo taken in June, 1999) died on May 20, 2010. He was 95. After serving as a finance ministry official, Murayama won a House of Representatives seat on the Liberal Democratic Party ticket in 1963 and served 12 terms, holding ministerial posts in finance and welfare affairs. He retired from politics in 2000.

TOKYO, Japan - Kazuo Ishikawa (L), who was given a life sentence and spent almost 32 years in prison over a 1963 murder in Sayama, Saitama Prefecture, before being released on parole, meets the press with his lawyer (R) after filing his third petition for a retrial with the Tokyo High Court on May 23, insisting he is innocent. PYONGYANG, North Korea - Takeshi Terakoshi is surrounded by Japanese reporters at Pyongyang hotel Aug. 19 after meeting with Japanese Red Cross Society officials. Terakoshi, who disappeared while fishing in the Sea of Japan in May 1963 and now lives in Pyongyang, told the reporters, ''I plan to return home.''

Masayoshi Ito

Born on Dec. 15, 1913 in Fukushima Prefecture. Ito was elected to the House of Representatives in 1963. He became acting deputy prime minister on June 12, 1980 after the sudden death of then Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira during the campaign for general elections. Ito stepped down as acting deputy prime minister on July 17 the same year. Died on May 20, 1994.

Keizo Obuchi

Born on June 25, 1937 in Gunma Prefecture and deceased on May 14, 2000. Obuchi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1963 at age 26, succeeding to his father's seat while still a graduate student of Waseda University. Obuchi became prime minister on July 30, 1998 but relinquished the premiership on April 5, 2000 after suffering a massive stroke. He died on May 14 the same year.
