Interpreter of Apollo 11 moon landing Nishiyama dies at 95

TOKYO, Japan - Simultaneous interpreter Sen Nishiyama (in file photo taken in May 1984), known for translating the communications of the Apollo 11 spaceship when it landed on the moon in 1969, died of old age at his home in Tokyo on July 2, the Japanese Centre of International P.E.N. said on July 12.. He was 95. Born in the United States, Nishiyama obtained Japanese citizenship after graduating from the University of Utah. He served as an adviser at the General Headquarters of the Allied forces and the U.S. Embassy after World War II.
