Critic Murobushi dies at 79

TOKYO, Japan - Well-known critic Tetsuro Murobushi (file photo taken in May, 1989) died of acute pneumonia at his home in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Oct. 26. He was 78. Murobushi was known particularly for his writings on corruption issues and was a frequent guest on TV programs.

Pianist and composer Kentaro Haneda dies at 58

TOKYO, Japan - Kentaro Haneda (file photo taken in May, 2005), a pianist and composer who appeared on various TV shows, died of hepatocellular carcinoma, a form of liver cancer, at a Tokyo hospital on June 3. He was 58. Haneda was a popular host of music show ''Untitled Concert'' on TV Asahi for seven years until this April when his health deteriorated.

Women's rights pioneer and politician, Kato, dies at 104

TOKYO, Japan - Shizue Kato (file photo taken in May, 1996), one of the first Japanese women to become a Diet member and a pioneer of women's rights in Japan, died on Dec. 22. She was 104. While studying in the United States, Kato met the famous feminist and pioneer of family planning, Margaret Sanger, around 1920. When she returned to Japan, she promoted the use of contraceptives, which was a taboo subject under the militaristic government. She also took part in a movement calling for women's suffrage.

President Kim burns incense for souls of Kwangju victims

KWANGJU, South Korea - South Korean President Kim Dae Jung (R) and his wife, Lee Ki Ho, (L) on May 18 burn incense for the souls of those killed in the military suppression of the democratization movement in May, 1980 in Kwangju and to make the ''May 18 Cemetery'' a national cemetery in Kwangju, 380 kilometers southwest of Seoul. By official account, more than 200 people were killed and 1,800 others were wounded during the nine-day bloody attack by paratroopers on the Kwangju protesters.
