It hosts one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Greek Christian Orthodox monasteries. The Meteora monasteries were inscribed onto UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1988. Meteora is also a protected habitat of the EU's Natura 2000 network. Meteora is popular with hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, and rock climbers from around the world.
