NASA’s Webb Finds Signs of Possible Aurorae on Isolated Brown Dwarf

Handout photo - This artist concept portrays the brown dwarf W1935, which is located 47 light-years from Earth. Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope found infrared emission from methane coming from W1935. This is an unexpected discovery because the brown dwarf is cold and lacks a host star; therefore, there is no obvious source of energy to heat its upper atmosphere and make the methane glow. The team speculates that the methane emission may be due to processes generating aurorae, shown here in red. Infrared emission from methane suggests atmospheric heating by auroral processes. These findings are being presented at the 243rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in New Orleans. To help explain the mystery of the infrared emission from methane, the team turned to our solar system. Methane in emission is a common feature in gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn. The upper-atmosphere heating that powers this emission is linked to aurorae. Photo by NASA, ESA, CSA, and L. Hustak (STScI) via AB

Handout photo - Astronomers used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to study 12 cold brown dwarfs. Two of them – W1935 and W2220 – appeared to be near twins of each other in composition, brightness, and temperature. However, W1935 showed emission from methane, as opposed to the anticipated absorption feature that was observed toward W2220. Italy sees gasoline prices pass 2 euro/liter threshold

STORY: Italy sees gasoline prices pass 2 euro/liter threshold DATELINE: Aug. 18, 2023 LENGTH: 0:00:52 LOCATION: Rome CATEGORY: ECONOMY SHOTLIST: 1. various of the gas stations in Rome STORYLINE: Drivers in Italy were confronted with the highest gasoline prices in more than a year on Thursday, with high demand and a new surge in global petroleum prices driving the upward trend. According to government data, the super-95 gasoline (the standard quality) cost 2.019 euros (2.198 U.S. dollars) per liter along the highways. The last time that prices were so high was in July 2022. Prices varied slightly by region, and they were lower for other types of vehicle fuel, such as diesel, liquified petroleum gas, and methane. Also, prices along the highways tend to be the highest. On the whole, gasoline prices are a key factor in establishing overall prices in the fuel sector. According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, one liter of super-95 gasoline cost 1.867 euros (2.033 U.S. dollars) in July and

Saturn Captured By James Webb Space Telescope

This image shows Saturn and some of its moons, captured by the James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST) NIRCam instrument on June 25, 2023. In this monochrome image, NIRCam filter F323N (3.23 microns) was color mapped with an orange hue. JWST turned to the ringed world Saturn in June 2023 to conduct a deep search for new ring structure and faint moons. Saturn itself appears to extremely dark at the infrared wavelengths sensed by JWST’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), as methane gas absorbs almost all of the sunlight falling on the atmosphere. However, the icy rings stay relatively bright, leading to the unusual appearance of Saturn in the JWST image. Several very deep Saturn exposures taken together with this image were designed to test JWST’s capacity to detect faint moons around the planet and its bright rings. Any newly discovered moons would be important dynamical tracers of the current Saturn system as well as its past history. This context image clearly shows details within the ring system, along with many of

Court Of Auditors Demands That France Reduce Its Cow Farms

Dairy cows in the barn at Ferme des Tilleuls in Saint Nauphary (82). Damien Canteloube is a milk producer. In his cowsheds, he feeds around one hundred cows, including forty-five milking cows, with linseed-based feed, which is very rich in omega-3s, and therefore emits less methane into the atmosphere. Like 7,000 farmers, he has chosen to produce, harvest and distribute under the Bleu-Blanc-Cœur label, which aims to improve biodiversity in the countryside and bring nutritional and environmental quality to consumers' plates.
