S. Korea lodges protest with Japan over Takeshima Day ceremony

SEOUL, South Korea - Hisashi Michigami, minister at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, arrives at the South Korean Foreign Ministry in Seoul on Feb. 23, 2014. The Foreign Ministry lodged a protest with Michigami over a ceremony held Feb. 22 in Matsue, the capital of the western Japan prefecture of Shimane, to commemorate the Japanese "incorporation" in 1905 of islets known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea. The local government designated Feb. 22 as Takeshima Day in 2005.

Speaking for the first time before the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament, the survivors sought a new trend toward nuclear arms abolition on the occasion of the launch last month of the administration of new U.S. President Barack Obama.
