A birth

A birth

A midwife washes a newly born baby in a basin. This composition was used frequently from the Edo Period in illustrations entitled The life of a person. Many of these have been preserved in Europe. The midwife was called babaa (old woman) because elderly women usually assumed this role. Synonyms include sanba and josanpu.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number51‐54‐0]
