The returnees on board the 4,900-ton ferry Salvia Maru of Tokai Kisen Co. included those returning permanently or temporarily, as well as construction workers and officials involved in rebuilding the island.

Volcanologists warn of a possible large-scale eruption in the sea off the island and a less likely eruption at the western foot of the island's 823-meter Mt. Oyama volcano.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Zhang Baoheng, 76, walks into the Fukuoka District Court on May 10 to file a lawsuit against the Japanese government and Mitsui Mining Co., seeking 207 million yen in compensation for his time as forced laborer in coal mines in Fukuoka Prefecture during World War II. Zhang was joined in the suit by eight other Chinese who say they were conscripted to Japan in 1943 and 1944 and were forced to work for Mitsui Mining at its Miike and Tagawa coal mines in Fukuoka Prefecture.
