JT eyeing 30 yen price hike for Mild Seven brand in July

TOKYO, Japan - With the tobacco excise tax due to be raised on July 1, Japan Tobacco Inc. said May 11 it has applied to the Finance Ministry for approval to raise the list prices of all 116 domestic tobacco brands by 10 to 30 yen, including a price increase that far exceeds the tax hike for the popular Mild Seven brand (in photo).

TOKYO, Japan - Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) said Dec. 1 it will take the unprecedented step of simultaneously launching six new cigarette brands (shown) on Jan. 7, in a bid to boost its domestic market share. The new brands are Mild Seven One Menthol Box, Bitter Valley, Fuji Renaissance, Fuji Renaissance 100's, Hi-Lite Menthol and BB Slugger.

Mystery illness has yet to strike Japan: Ministry panel

TOKYO, Japan - A health ministry official (standing) tells a panel meeting March 26 that all seven patients in Japan suspected of being infected with a deadly mystery illness are not suffering from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), ministry officials said. The panel determined that the seven are not infected with SARS, given that their symptoms are relatively mild and there have been no reports of secondary infection.

Company chief nabbed on suspicion of possessing fake cigarettes

TOKYO, Japan - The photo shows counterfeit cigarettes at Shinjuku Police Station on June 24, seized from a 58-year-old company president. Police arrested Fumio Sasai, head of real-estate company Yazaki Sangyo, on suspicion of possessing numerous packs of bogus Mild Seven Lights and Seven Stars cigarettes, brands sold by Japan Tobacco Inc.

Forged cigarettes found in 3 prefectures near Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan - Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) has found at least 68 elaborately forged cigarette packs made to resemble two famous brands in Ibaraki, Saitama and Gunma prefectures. The photo, delivered by the Japanese tobacco monopoly in Tokyo on June 19, shows a genuine Mild Seven Lights package (L) and a forged one (R). The forged packs are almost identical to the genuine products except for subtle package distinctions, such as a missing bar code and a wrongly printed Chinese character, but the cigarettes taste very different.
