Minatogawa Shrine

Minatogawa Shrine

Located about 200 meters north of JR Kobe Station in Chuo Ward, Minatogawa Shinto Shrine is dedicated to Kusunoki Masashige, who killed himself here after being defeated by the Ashikaga clan in the Battle of Minatogawa in 1336. The building in the centre is the praying hall, and the one behind it is the main hall. This photograph was apparently taken in the first half of the Meiji Period. A stone monument erected by Shogun Tokugawa Mitsukuni in 1692 still exists.==Date:unknown, Place:Kobe, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number90‐43‐0]

The theater on the right is Daikoku-za, renovated in 1890. An ultra-modern lamp is installed at the front. Minatogawa

Minatogawa

Minato River is flowing at a high level on the left and pine trees line the road. The river was not only troublesome because of the danger of flooding but also because it formed a barrier between the old town of Hyogo and Kobe, which was growing rapidly after opening of the port. After the diversion of the river to the west in 1901, the area became Mitanogawa Park and an entertainment district called Shinkaichi.==Date:unknown, Place:Kobe, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number56‐6‐0]
