Father of scandal-tainted Kabuki star throws beans

NAGOYA, Japan - Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro (R), father of scandal-tainted Kabuki star Ebizo, throws beans, a tradition marking the lunar calendar start of spring, at Misonoza theater in Nagoya on Feb. 3, 2011, ahead of the Feb. 5 start of a Kabuki show there. Ebizo, who is indefinitely suspending performances following his involvement in a bar brawl previous November, had to cancel his participation in the show, with his father telling fans who gathered for the bean scattering, ''A lot of things happened last year, and I want to invite new luck.'' The beans are intended to drive demons away and invite luck.
