Electrical discharge machine introduced by Nagatsu Manufacturing as part of its work automation efforts.

Nagatsu Seisakusho will begin automating its main plant to improve the efficiencyof machining die parts. The company will introduce work changers for 5-axis machining centers (MC) and other equipment to replace processed parts. The company plans to introduce several 5-axis MCs and work changers as a set if they are utilized smoothly. The installation cost is about 10 million yen. Workers without machining skills only need to take the workpiece and electrodes in and out of the shelves at the site. The company's domestic sales are about 1.6 billion yen. However, the domestic mold market is shrinking. Rather than expanding sales, this automation initiative is aimed at strengthening cost competitiveness and promoting work style reform. Once the automation at the head office plant gets going, the company plans to start automation at the Niigata plant in Mitsuke City, Niigata Prefecture in two to three years. Hiroshige - 53 Stations of the Tokaido - Print 29

Hiroshige - 53 Stations of the Tokaido - Print 29

29 Mitsuke - A large sand-bank in the centre of the "Heaven-dragon" River, and people crossing the further arm in boats; two other boats in foreground, moored to the sand-bank, and the distant shore enveloped in mist. The name of this station was derived from the fact that people travelling from Kyoto to Edo were able to get their first glimpse of Mount Fuji from here. The rapidly flowing river "Tenryu" flowed west of the station and travellers had to cross the river by ferryboat. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858). The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido - Hoeido edition (1831-4) Date: 1831 - 1834

A private house

A private house

This is the same photograph as one published in the December 1, 1873 issue of The Far East with the caption View from Aoyama Road. Aoyama is a plateau, and present-day Aoyama Dori connects the low lands of Akasaka Mitsuke and Shibuya. This photograph was probably taken from the location of present-day Aoyama Dori near Akasaka Mitsuke, facing south. However, there is no explanation in The Far East and so it is hard to say for sure.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number90‐22‐0]

First Imperial Hotel

First Imperial Hotel

The hotel is still at this location, but the entrance faces west onto Hibiya Dori rather than north as in this photograph. A moat connected Hibiya Mitsuke and Yamashita Mitsuke. The moat was filled in at the time of the opening of Hibiya Park in 1903. Takarazuka Theatre and Sukaraza Theatre are now standing on the former moat. The building in this photograph burnt down on April 16, 1922. Cherry trees at Ueno Park

Cherry trees at Ueno Park

Akasaka Mitsuke was one of the watchtowers at Edo Castle and had an outer gate. The gate, Akasaka Gomon, was destroyed in 1872, leaving only the stone wall. This photograph was taken from the site of the former gate (present-day Akasaka Mitsuke intersection). On the right is Benkei Moat and on the left Tameike (pond). The cherry trees were apparently planted in 1881. Since the photograph does not show Benkei Bridge, constructed in 1889, this photograph was probably taken around 1887.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number53‐45‐2]
