Enoshima Island

Enoshima Island

Enoshima, a small island in Sagami Bay, has been a place of worship since ancient time. After the mid-Edo era, pilgrimage to the island became popular among the common people. Many foreigners visited the island after Yokohama Harbour was opened for trade. Enoshima, Kanazawa and Miyagase in the Tanzawa mountains were the most popular tourist spots for foreigners.==Date:unknown, Place:Enoshima, Photo:Ogawa Kazumasa, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number9‐3‐0]

Miyagase,Nakatsugawa Gorge

Located in the forest at Mt. Tanzawa, Miyagase was a popular destination in the area where foreigners were allowed to go. Because many foreigners enjoyed the hot springs and trout fishing in the area captured in this photograph, it was called Tojin-ga-Hara ( Chinese River Bed ). Due to the Miyagase Dam construction in 1998, the entire area disappeared under the water. Currently tourism is being promoted in the Mizuno-go area.==Date:unknown, Place:Kanagawa, Photo:F.
