The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that on Monday, January 13, at around 21:19 JST, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Hyuga-nada Sea off the coast of Kyushu Island, Japan, at a depth of 18.6 miles (30 kilometers). A tsunami warning was also issued for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. A tsunami of approximately 20 cm was observed, and the warning was lifted. The video shows a package shaking during the quake in a hotel room in Miyazaki City.

Japan-U.S. military drills begin in southern Kyushu

Joint military drills by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) and U.S. Marines begin in southern Kyushu on Nov. 5. The drills, which commenced with an opening ceremony at the GSDF's Kirishima range, will take place in Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Kumamoto prefectures. The drills are the first to be conducted in the southern part of Kyushu, and they are aimed at strengthening the two sides' joint tactical ability.

Japan saw tsunami waves of about 1 meter high in coastal areas on Sunday but no major damage or flooding after the eruption of an underwater volcano off Tonga led to evacuation orders for nearly 230,000 citizens. Japan's weather agency issued tsunami warnings and advisories in the early hours for the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Okinawa, but these were all lifted in the afternoon, after around 14 hours. Up to 229,000 people in eight prefectures -- Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Chiba, Tokushima, Kochi, Miyazaki and Kagoshima -- were asked to flee from the seaside, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
