Ex-top defense procurement official meets reporters

Masahiro Akiyama, vice minister of Japan's Defense Agency, meets reporters in Tokyo on Sept. 4 after a former top procurement official at the agency, Masuo Morodomi, was arrested on suspicion of causing damage to state finances over purchases of defense equipment. Ex-Defense Agency official gets suspended term

TOKYO, Japan - Masuo Morodomi, a former senior Defense Agency official, walks into the Tokyo District Court on Oct. 12. He was sentenced later to three years in prison, suspended for five years, for causing losses to the state by illegally reducing the refunds to be made by defense contractors for overcharging the agency.
